Keeping records neutral and custody-appropriate

Back to guidance

Neutral, child-focused notes help you communicate clearly and keep records that hold up over time.

Aim for neutral language Use verbs and facts instead of labels or motives. For example, "arrived 25 minutes late" is clearer than "disrespectful."

Stick to what you observed If you did not see it, note the source: "Child reported..." Avoid conclusions about intent.

Keep it child-focused Track routines such as exchanges, school, sleep, meals, and homework. These details stay relevant and easier to verify.

Balance your record Include ordinary days and positive moments. A consistent log looks more credible than one that only covers conflict.

Quick checklist

  • Date, time, and location
  • Observable behavior or communication
  • Impact on the child or schedule
  • Any resolution or follow-up
